A 6 week course about making interesting characters for short and long form improv.

Runs on Sundays from March 22nd to May 3rd (NB No class on Easter Sunday, April 5th).

Funny, empathetic, ridiculous, extreme, grounded… there’s room for all of them!
Why do certain characters engage an audience?
Why do improvisers tends to come back to a handful of character types again and again, and is it a bad thing?

Robert Lane
Robert Lane is an actor, improviser, musician, writer and facilitator. He is a founding member of comedy improvisation groups Improv Wolves and Noteworthy: The Made-Up Musical. He has recently written and directed his first short film, Fortune Tell Her, which has been nominated for Best Short at Midlands Movies Awards and selected for Flatpack Festival, Oxford Shorts Festival, Worcester Film Festival, Reel Brum, BFI Network Short Film Club and Gobby Flicks. He played one of the leads in Sam and Dan Get Lost which won Best Feature at the Midland Movie Awards and features Robert’s music as the score.

Robert facilitates workshops on topics including songwriting and comedy improvisation and provides regular music and drama sessions for Midland Mencap. As a 2024 Birmingham Rep Foundry Artist he delivered a 12 week co-creation project with a community group, culminating with a performance at Birmingham Rep. He has delivered workshops for a range of age groups in various settings including schools and community hubs. He is the host of The Robert Lane Creative Careers Podcast which features chats with creatives about their careers and how they make their work.
