How do you go from improvising single scenes to larger stories with an overall story arc?

That’s what we’ll be exploring in this course, as we explore how to effectively chain together scenes with the same characters to tell a narrative. We’ll look at the common elements of story arcs, how we can give our protagonists clear wants and needs, and how to structure our longform improvisation so that it fits the classic beats of storytelling.

By the end of the course, we’ll have devised a longform format that allows us to tell an engaging story with a satisfying ending, and prepared to perform it at Midlands Improv Night!

David Harvey

David first started improvising and joined the Birmingham Improv Scene about 15 years ago. Today, he performs regularly with Box of Frogs and hosts Birmingham Improv’s monthly Spaghetti Junction show. He was also a founding member of Breakfast of Champions and helped to develop the Big Breakfast, their signature narrative longform format. He manages a technology training academy in his 9-5 and is passionate about helping people get into tech, just like he’s passionate about helping people grow and develop their improvisation skills!

Introduction to Improv
Introduction to Improv 654 314 Jon Trevor

Are you a comedy aficionado? Do you love “Whose Line is it Anyway?” Are you a fan of comedy legends who started in improv, such as Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Mike Myers, and Keegan-Michael Key? Then this is the course for you!

What will you learn on this course?

Discover the joy, freedom, and challenge of Improv. Learn to be more creative and playful in this low-pressure, high-enjoyment class that cultivates a fun, friendly, supportive and stress-free environment.

Improv is not the same as stand-up; you are not alone on stage and it’s not about telling jokes. It’s about working together as a team with other improvisers to spontaneously create group stories, scenes & sketches. There’s no such thing as failure in improv!

In this 12-week course, you will learn the core skills of improvised comedy from Jon Trevor, the founder and leader of Box of Frogs and director of the Birmingham Improv Festival.

Throughout the course, you will progress as a team while learning core improvisation skills like Spontaneity, Listening, Yes and Character, Scenes, Story, and Status.

Towards the end of the course, you can be part of a public showcase performance, providing the perfect opportunity to share your newfound skills with family and friends

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years at all levels. It is open to beginners; no drama, acting, comedy or improv experience is required as full guidance is given. It is also open to writers, actors, and comedians looking to widen their skills, and to introverts who are wanting to gain more confidence!
