SUMMARY:An Introduction to Musical Improv - 2 day course
DESCRIPTION:10am to 5pm both days.  Zellig building\, Digbeth.  Cost £75. Tickets below. \nMusical improv is fast\, playful and collaborative\, and a lot more achievable than it may look! Guided by founder members of Birmingham favourites Noteworthy: The Made Up Musical\, this two-day introduction explores the fundamentals of creating songs and musical scenes completely in the moment\, building confidence in singing\, listening and making bold choices together. \nThrough games\, exercises and coached scene work\, you’ll develop practical tools and techniques for musical improvisation in a supportive and low-pressure environment\, including: \n\nSimple improvised song structures\nTransitioning from scenes into songs\nEnsemble singing and support\nTechniques for spontaneous and meaningful lyrics\n\nYou do not need to be a trained singer or musician to take part. The weekend is designed to be supportive\, playful and collaborative\, helping you build confidence in improvising songs\, supporting as ensemble\, and trusting your own musical instincts. \nCome ready to experiment and discover the joy of musical improv! \nWho is it for? \nWe ask that you either have basic training in improvisation or some musical theatre experience. This workshop isn’t suitable for complete beginners.  If you aren’t sure if this workshop is suitable for you\, please get in touch! Email: info@birminghamimprov.com \n About your facilitators: \n Jacky Wood \n \nJacky is a musical stand-up comedian\, actor and improviser who is passionate about sharing the joy of improv. Originally working in devised theatre\, she soon moved into comedy and hasn’t looked back. \nJacky’s improv training includes study at Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) in New York\, alongside musical improv with Baby Wants Candy\, Chris Grace\, Will Naameh (aka MC Hammersmith)\, and UK legends Showstopper! The Improvised Musical. \n  \n  \nKatie Goldhawk \n \nKatie is a comedy actor and improviser who has been performing musical improv for over 10 years. She’s passionate about making improv accessible to everyone\, and is a firm believer that anyone can do it – often joking: “Well\, what are we doing right now?” in everyday conversation. \nKatie has a degree in Drama and Theatre Arts from the University of Birmingham\, and also trained at Guildhall School of Music & Drama. \n  \n  \nGeddes Cureton (Musical Director) \n \n  \nGeddes can usually be found behind a keyboard\, weaving improvised musical magic across Birmingham’s comedy improv scene. Known for his musical “Easter eggs”\, he has a talent for turning even the smallest suggestion into music. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Solo Improv with Andre Besseling
DESCRIPTION:Soloimprov: the art of improvising with yourself \nThis workshop is now sold out.  To go on the waiting list\, email bookings@birminghamimprov.com with your name and phone number\, in case of late cancellations. \nWhether you are planning to go solo or not\, the tools of the workshop are essential to all improvisers. Whatever format or style you are playing\, you always have to take your time\, use acting skills and stay in the moment. All of these tools and techniques are explored in this workshop. \nWe shall do several exercises on different formats\, scenebuilding and storytelling\, using the usefull model: ‘The IMPRO-circle’. It explains how improvisation really works\, whether you are playing solo or not. After this workshop you will feel confident on improvising on your own\, so you will be even better\, when you are playing with others. \n \nAndre Besseling \nAndre has been a professional improvisor and trainer since 1990. He focuses on the use of theater and improv-skills in scene work and dramatic situations. He sees Improv is a great way to have fun and work at the same time on one’s personal development. The focus on solo-improv makes this even a stronger focuspoint.\nAndre is a pioneer of improv-theater and Theatresports in Holland. He has taught hundreds of improv-workshops to almost all the main improv-groups in and outside Holland. Besides initiating several improv-groups\, he started the festival IMPRO-Amsterdam and currently is the artistic director of the IMPRO-academy and the REMI-festival\, the Amsterdam festival on solo-improv.\nHe has written a bestseller about improv-theater: ‘Theater vanuit het Niets’ (Theater out of Nothing)

Booking below. \nBrian James O’Connell teaches you the skills you need to find your “position” in the scene and then play it to the hilt.  If you are able to understand the few tools & techniques needed to play these individual scenes\, every other choice you make on stage will be from a place of renewed confidence and successful fun! \nTopics include: “Thing. Concept. Idea.”\, “The Five Scenes Everyone Tells You *NOT* To Do But Darn It They Come Up On Stage Anyway”\, “Playing Archetypes”\, “Mapping Characters” and many\, many more. \nThis workshop is dedicated to giving you practical applications of improv and providing replicable good habits/behavior on stage. The goal is to be able to take this workshop during the day and be able to execute the practice immediately on stage that night!  \nBrian James O’Connell \nis a working actor\, writer\, director\, filmmaker and teacher in Los Angeles.
